The Japanese Tea Ceremony is also known as the Way of Tea (Chanoyu, Sado, or simply Ocha) an artisitc pastime unique to Japan. It is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of powedered green tea known as 'matcha'.
The elaborate and refined Japanese Tea Ceremony is meant to demonstrate respect through grace and good etiquette. It also means pouring all one's attention into predefined movements. The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, preparing a bowl of tea from one's heart.
And for the internationally-cultured and well-educated delegates, it's definitely an additional wealth of knowledge and learning they could carry on even after the competition.
