Philippines' quest for a five-year uninterrupted Top 5 placement ended when Mary Jean Lastimosa failed to advance further in the winning circle. Netizens and a lot of pageant experts are blaming Stella Marquez Araneta (the Colombian franchise holder of Miss Universe Philippines and the Chairperson of BPCI) for providing mediocre wardrobe and gown to Miss Philippines. Since 2000, the Colombian designer Alfredo Barazza has always been appointed by Stella to create gowns for the Philippine delegate. Speculations are loud that the two are sabotaging the chances of Philippines to win its third elusive crown by giving lackluster evening gown and national costume for the Philippine representative. Renowned world-class Filipino designers like Michael Cinco, Leo Almodal, etc.,were very vocal for their willingness to dress Miss Philippines but have always been turned down by Stella who claimed that Filipino designers were 'not good enough'.

It has always been the eternal sentiments of Filipino pageant enthusiasts around the world that the Miss Universe franchise in the Philippines should be given to a 'REAL' Filipino and not to a Colombian national! Unless someone will buy the MUP, then the franchise will still remain in Stella Araneta's hands:)
