Wit and intelligence over beauty ultimately dominated during the recently-concluded Miss Philippines Earth 2017 pageant that saw the crowning of Karen Ibasco of Manila who is a medical physicist and a university professor at the University of Santo Tomas.
When asked the final question, "What change do you want to see in terms of environmental policies in the country?"
Karen responded with eloquence, "Everyone is experiencing climate change. I'm just grateful that the Philippines has signed the Paris Treaty. What I want to see is...a carbon tax. In that way, we would invest in renewable energy to help our world to be a better place, inhabitable for the whole country."
Kim settled as Karen's elemental court nabbing the Miss Philippines Earth-Air 2017 tiara together with Jessica Marasigan of Caloocan City as MPE-Water, Nellza Bautista of Villanueva, Misamis Oriental as Fire, and VanessaMae Castillo of Lobo, Batangas as Eco-tourism.
Karen Ibasco was a former Binibining Pilipinas 2016 candidate before joining this year's Miss Philippines Earth pageant. She will represent the country in the 17th edition of Miss Earth and hopes to put the Philippines' name back in the Semi-finalist circle. The Philippines was unplaced last year at Miss Earth with the controversial Imelda Schweighart as the delegate.
