Travel and Tourism: A Glimpse of Pha That Luang

Pha That Luang in Vientiane, Laos

One of the important landmarks that you shouldn't miss when visiting
That Luang or the Golden Stupa

Vientiane, Laos is the Pha That Luang or "Great Golden Stupa" where it is believed to enshrine the breast bone of the divine Buddha brought by the Indian missionaries from the Royal court of Emperor Ashoka during the third century. The golden stupa is literally covered with 500 kilograms of authentic gold leaf and precious metals combined. This could be the reason why it looks so splendid from afar especially when the sun's rays strike the magnificent structure.

Aside from the ancient, revered That Luang, you can also find within the vicinity the temples and other Buddhist relics of varying sizes. And just a stone's throw from the stupa is the giant reclining statue of golden Buddha. It looks gorgeous and photogenic, so don't miss to snap a shot with your camera upon visiting.

How to get to Pha That Luang

The most convenient way to get there from the center is through tuk tuk which will cost around 100 thai baht or approximately 25,000 Lao Kip (more expensive for white foreigners). If you know how to drive, you can also rent a motorbike so you can go to many places as much as you like. The golden stupa runs North from Patuxai Monument.

Opening Hours and Entrance Fee

As of this writing, the admission fee to the golden stupa is around 5,000 Kip per person. It opens daily from 1am until 4pm. If you don't want to join with the rest of the crowd, the best time to go there is during early morning.
